Very often it is said that the saildrive is as old as the engine so will be worn too. However, the engine suffers much more from the low loads and short trips typical for a cruising boat than the transmission. The transmission is laid out for thousands of hours and is capable to handle the full power of the engine. When cruising, the engine will likely be run at only 50% of it's power most of the time. While this means more wear to a typical diesel engine, because it might not reach it's operating temperature, it means the gearbox is highly overrated and wear and tear will be minimal.
